Buying a used outboard can save thousands of dollars, but only if you know what to look for. Here’s a practical buyer’s guide based on what we see every day at Blueys Engine Shop.
- Match horsepower and weight to your boat – Check the manufacturer’s max HP rating and transom strength.
- Decide between 2-stroke and 4-stroke – 4-strokes are quieter, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient for most recreational use.
- Confirm shaft length – 15″ short, 20″ long, or 25″ extra-long. Wrong shaft length causes ventilation or water ingestion.
- Inspect hours, compression, and service history – We compression-test every motor and publish the results.
- Look at the brand reputation – Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Mercury dominate the used market for good reason.
